ARP has again partnered with the American Society of Naval Engineers to produce a special issue of the Naval Engineers Journal showcasing some of the research presented at last year's symposium. As we gear up for this year's symposium--coming up in less than three months--take some time to review one of many conversations the symposium facilitated with researchers like you. The papers selected and shared here showcase the critical connection between research-informed engineering and the ability to deliver advanced warfighting capability. Central to all the papers is a consideration of how new technologies can be used not just to produce warfighting capabilities, as in the case of additive manufacturing, but to optimize the decision making process involved in developing and deploying those capabilities. "#RAMS discipline is essential to ensure a highly reliable, robust & safe service of all types of missions, may they be in #naval, #automotive, #aeronautical or #space area. As a result, this field is carefully covered in all #engineering domains with the critical purpose of ensuring achievement of mission objectives, proper quantification of #risk and most importantly, safe design, development, and operation. All global players are using the RAMS tools and methods to better improve the #design of their engineering systems and ensure that the likelihood of failure is kept at a minimum acceptable. Over the years, the whole space field has experienced an exceptional progress mainly due to the advancement in #industrial #technologies, development of #spacequality product lines but perhaps, more importantly, miniaturization and overall #digitalization. The consistent advancement of #technology for #spacecraft components/units instinctively anticipates more complex and ambitious goals or missions. Eric Hultgren presented PacMar Technologies paper “Advanced Thermal Monitoring of Shipboard Cooling Systems” at the 2024 American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) Advanced Machinery Technology Symposium in Philadelphia, PA on May 1. This paper describes the development and test of a Thermal Virtual Agent that was developed to monitor and predict future performance of shipboard heat exchangers. The Thermal Virtual Agent is a simplified Digital Twin model that focuses on cooling system performance by using Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) software to monitor the performance of shipboard cooling systems using real-time operating parameters. Testing of the Thermal Virtual Agent was conducted on the cooling system of PacMar Technologies’ 375 hp Electric Propulsion Testbed at its facility in Portland, Maine. Implementation of this Virtual Agent onto manned and unmanned vessels will reduce unscheduled downtimes and total ownership costs.
