I am so happy to share my new article on #aiaa Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets. I did this research at #umich Department of Aerospace Engineering. This paper employs a recently-developed control scheme, Learning Reference Governor, to perform safe rendezvous and docking in space. The significance of this method is that this is a model-free approach, meaning the implementation of the LRG does not require an explicit dynamics model of the system but instead relies on learning in space. Furthermore, this method guarantees constraints satisfaction even during the learning phase. If you are interested check this link. I thoroughly enjoyed this Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lecture series on the different sub-systems of the highly successful Space Shuttle program. This online course has given me a valuable insight into the meticulous design of every area of the vehicles and the approach taken by the Engineers, including the problems they faced. There was a particularly captivating Lecture by Mr Robert Ried on Aerothermodynamics; an area of fluid mechanics previously unknown to me. I reveled in this opportunity to discover such a fascinating subject, especially with its real-world application. A surprising amount of Chemistry was involved, as 50% of the heating of the Shuttle was from the radiation of thermal energy due to the catalytic reactions that took place on and near the surface of the thermal protective tiles. The innovative re-radiation of this heat by the Thermal Protection System (TPS) is one of the many examples of the epistemological development that is an often overlooked aim of NASA's programs. Numerous areas of the Shuttle's research and testing resulted in vicarious knowledge procurement; a true milestone of human endeavor. #aerospaceengineering #aerodynamics #aerothermodynamics

This June, MIT Alumni’s annual Technology Day symposium, "Research from Above and Beyond: MIT in Space," took over 800 alumni and guests into the far reaches of space. MIT faculty members, including AeroAstro's Kerri Cahoy, Danielle Wood and Jeffrey Hoffman, shared out-of-this-world research at scales ranging from tiny nanosatellites to massive black holes. AeroAstro alum Warren Hoburg '08 and fellow MIT alum Stephen Bowen '93, both astronauts currently on the International Space Station National Laboratory appeared by video to share observations about how the human body adapts to space, gave shout-outs to fellow alums, and welcomed Sally Kornbluth to MIT. As a welcoming gesture from the global alumni community, recent AeroAstro PhD graduate Maya Nasr (pictured) presented Kornbluth with a replica of the HUMANS nanowafer a 6-inch silicon wafer that was sent to space with recordings in 64 languages by people from more than 80 countries. Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Elvira Fortunato, visited ISTsat-1, at the Taguspark campus of Instituto Superior Técnico, before its departure to French Guiana, from where it will be launched into space, as a part of the inaugural flight of the Ariane 6 rocket, scheduled for June or July 2024, according to forecasts from the European Space Agency - ESA. 🛰️🚀 During the visit, it was possible to visit the IST NanosatLab clean room, opened in 2022 by Técnico and Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), where ISTsat-1 is located, the IST NanosatLab laboratory and the satellite tracking room, CS5CEP. The project is coordinated by Rui M. We are thrilled to share that Natasha Bosanac, Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder College of Engineering & Applied Science has been honored with the 2024 Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) Young Investigator Program award. 🏆 Her pioneering research in spacecraft trajectories within cislunar space is pushing the boundaries of astrodynamics. Although NASA has been sending spacecraft to the Moon for decades, cislunar space is a chaotic and complex environment, and the recent expansion of government and commercial interest in missions is presenting new challenges. Dr. Bosanac and her research group are addressing some of these obstacles using a data-driven technique called clustering to automatically discover groups of geometrically distinct spacecraft trajectories. These groups form a summary that reduces the burden on human operators. “The array of possible motions between any point A and point B is cislunar space can be incredibly diverse,” Bosanac said. “One guiding motivation of our work is to contribute to the astrodynamics community’s quest for a more comprehensive understanding of motion in this area. This will help us with the spacecraft trajectory design and prediction tasks that will be critical to future cislunar operations while allowing humans to focus on more complex decision-making.” In addition to this grant, Bosanac is part of a separate Air Force Research Laboratory multi-year program to advance orbital and artificial intelligence research.
