Decarbonization of heavy industry and the transportation sector is the major focus of the US Department of Energy.
Leading scientists and technicians at Universities and US National Laboratories are intimately involved as are several Nobel Laureates and specialty manufacturers.
A major focus of those efforts is the production of hydrogen.
What’s a good way to produce hydrogen in an environmentally responsible way you may ask?
The answer is with an electrolyzer.
From chemistry we know that direct current applied to positive and negative terminals immersed in clear water cause hydrogen to form on one terminal and pure oxygen to form on the other.
One then asks what is so important about that?
The answer is when hydrogen burns it does not produce greenhouse gasses nor contribute to global warming.
Sounds pretty interesting if you ask me.
As engineers we know that trying something new often doesn’t go well.
But we need to remember that industrial scale production of hydrogen by carbon neutral sources is not new at all.
The technology is nearly a century old.
To learn more, keep reading and take a trip back in time on the snowy mountains of Scandinavia.
The story goes like this: The Vemork hydroelectric power plant is located outside the town of Rjukan in Vestfold of Telemark county, Norway.
Snowmelt in that part of Norway flows only over granite rock with no sediment, so the water is crystal clear and ultra pure.
An innovative company called Norsk Hydro designed and built the hydro plant.
It opened in 1911, and initially its main purpose being to fix nitrogen in the production of fertilizer.
At opening, it was the world's largest power plant with a capacity of 108 megawatt.
The reason it’s exciting today is because the Vermok power station later produced carbon neutral hydrogen at an industrial scale from an electrolyzer.
And remember, an electrolyzer supplies direct current to water with a positive electrode and a negative electrode.
Pure hydrogen accumulates on one and pure oxygen accumulates on the other.
This was a moonshot goal back then since converting alternating current to direct current would have required a complex and very large rectifier to regulate generator output voltage.
But Hydro plant designers and operators knew from experience that power could be accurately controlled by throttling water flow from the dam with a control valve.
The simple control plan worked as operators manually adjusted water flow to regulate the output voltage of the generator so the hydrogen production was stable.

What is pitching of the wind turbine blades?
Wind turbine pitch refers to the mechanism by which the angle of the turbine blades is adjusted to optimize energy generation. By altering the pitch angle, the blades can effectively capture the maximum amount of wind energy available while ensuring the turbine operates within safe operational limits. This adjustment allows turbines to maintain efficiency and stability in varying wind speeds and directions, contributing to reliable and consistent electricity production from wind power.
