This commitment was demonstrated by establishing an innovation cell and appointing a Chief Innovation Officer even before the launch of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. I serve as the first Chief Innovation Officer, highlighting the government's pioneering role in integrating innovation at a ministerial level. ◆ As Vice Chairman of AICTE, I am focused on seamlessly integrating innovation with technical education. Our policies are designed to ensure that they are in sync with this process, effectively supporting our technical institutes to evolve into hubs of educational innovation. ◆ Our central agenda is reinforced by strong support from the Prime Minister and initiatives like the Smart India Hackathon, which started in 2017. Reflections from the FICCI Roundtable on Benchmarking in Higher Education ( 28 November 2023 ) I am delighted to share my experiences from the recent FICCI roundtable held in New Delhi, focused on the crucial topic of "Raising the Bar: The Significance of Benchmarking in Higher Education". As a participant and a representative of Symbiosis International University, it was an honor to engage in discussions with esteemed vice chancellors from various Indian universities and innovative leaders from the edutech sector. The diversity of perspectives enriched our conversations, highlighting the multifaceted nature of benchmarking in higher education. The roundtable, chaired by Dr. Vidya Yeravdekar Chair of the Higher Education Committee, explored the various facets of benchmarking, ranking and rating, discussing both their positive and negative impacts. We also examined the opportunities and challenges they present, and how they can contribute to fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within our educational institutions. My contribution focused on practical issues related to benchmarking and rankings. I highlighted the significance of developing a ranking and benchmarking framework that truly reflects the Indian context. This involves understanding and integrating the aspirations of our students, ensuring that the framework is balanced and not overly focused on research or Western models. It's crucial to incorporate local realities, along with the unique challenges and opportunities present in the Indian educational landscape. This event was a reminder of our collective responsibility to nurture and prepare future generations. By setting high benchmarks and striving for excellence, we can ensure that our educational institutions remain at the forefront of global education. I extend my gratitude to FICCI for organizing this enlightening event and to all the participants for their valuable insights.
