About

Alefiyah Malbari, M.D., is the inaugural head of the Division of Ambulatory Pediatrics for Dell Medical School and an associate professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Medical Education. She oversees the development and growth of this new division in the Department of Pediatrics with a vision to expand outpatient general pediatric services and provide a medical home for patients and families in our communities. Malbari has strong clinical and practice-building expertise along with a passion for medical education. Under her guidance, the new Division of Ambulatory Pediatrics will foster the practice of excellent, patient and family centered clinical care while also building medical education and research arms of the program. Malbari’s medical education appointments include serving as a mentor in the DOCS clinical skills course for medical students in all four years as well as being involved in pediatric residency education and curriculum development at the graduate medical level.

Malbari came to Austin from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, where she served as the medical director for the General Pediatric Faculty Practice as well as the course director for the Art and Science of Medicine introduction to clinical skills course in the medical school. She was significantly involved in undergraduate and graduate medical education while at Mount Sinai and was inducted as a fellow educator in the Institute of Medical Education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2020. In addition to teaching, Malbari was involved in medical education scholarly research and served on several medical education committees.

In the clinical realm, Malbari is a well established and sought after general pediatrician and was named as a Top Pediatrician 2020 in New York Magazine. Recognizing her exemplary interpersonal skills and bedside manner, she was awarded the Cullman Family Award for Excellence in Physician Communication in 2016 and 2018.

Malbari was born, brought up and educated in New York earning her Bachelor of Arts degree at New York University and her medical degree at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. She completed her pediatric residency training and served as chief resident at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. After several years of enjoying living in New York City, she is excited to be in Austin with her husband and three children.
