Established in 1952, SIAM is a nonprofit international community with over 14,500 individual members. The organization’s goals include advancing the application of mathematics and computational science to engineering, industry, science and society; promoting research leading to new mathematical and computational methods; and providing an outlet for exchanging information between mathematicians, engineers and scientists.

Bui-Thanh’s responsibilities as the SIAM secretary involve keeping records of the SIAM activity group and coordinating communication for the group such as email correspondence, newsletters, and website content, as well as submitting an annual report. He also currently serves as the vice president of the SIAM Texas-Louisiana Section.

In 2013, Bui-Thanh joined the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics where his current research focus is on developing model-aware machine learning methods for large-scale uncertainty quantification and epidemics. His work has made important contributions to computational geosciences, high-order finite element methods, dimensionality reduction, computational inverse problems, and uncertainty quantification.

Bui-Thanh is a core member of the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering. He holds the William J. Murray, Jr. Fellowship in Engineering No. 4.
